The Future of Infant Formula: Microalgae Are Changing the Rules of Nutrition

Every mother wants the best for her child, and infant nutrition often becomes one of the most important and widely discussed topics. Breast milk is irreplaceable, but when a substitute is needed, parents always look for the closest possible alternative. Science is now offering a new solution.

Scientists from the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) have made a breakthrough discovery that could completely change our understanding of infant formula production. They propose using oils derived from microalgae called Vischeria punctata to make infant formula more digestible and effective for newborns. This was reported by RIA Novosti, citing a study published in the journal Functional Plant Biology.

Why Palmitic Acid Is Critical for Infants

Roman Sidorov, a leading researcher at the RAS Institute of Plant Physiology, explains that palmitic acid is vital for healthy infant development. In breast milk, this fatty acid is located in the central position of triacylglycerols, which allows it to be absorbed most efficiently by the infant’s body.

The problem is that in most modern infant formulas, palmitic acid from vegetable oils is located in outer positions. This can lead to:

Digestive issues, such as constipation, which is common among formula-fed infants

Disrupted calcium metabolism, which is crucial for proper bone and skeletal development

Until now, the fat structure closest to breast milk was beta-palmitate derived from pork fat. However, its use is limited due to religious and ethical concerns.

Microalgae: Nature’s Perfect Solution

The Vischeria punctata microalgae proposed by RAS scientists offer a natural and ethical alternative. When grown in nitrogen-deficient conditions, about 40% of their cell volume is filled with lipid droplets in which palmitic acid occupies the central position—just like in breast milk fat.

This means that microalgae-based infant formula would be:

Easier to digest, significantly reducing digestive discomfort

More beneficial, supporting proper calcium absorption and healthy bone development

Natural and ethical, suitable for families with religious or ethical restrictions

The scientists plan to optimize cultivation methods for these microalgae up to a semi-industrial scale, with the goal of developing a technology to produce valuable oils for a new generation of infant nutrition.
